The Battersea Power Station redevelopment project has introduced the mix used approach to revive the iconic building originally designed by British architect Giles Gilbert Scott (who designed iconic telephone booth) along with the surrounding areas. The BPS has long history, starting from its opening in 1930 till date and most famously used in Pink Floyd performance (In 1977, Pink Floyd created the iconic album artwork for ‘Animals’, by flying a massive inflatable pig over Battersea Power Station). The building is grade II structure hence allowing re-adaptive use along with few structural intervention.
The re-adaptive process also allowed the reorganization of various new insertion in the surrounding areas along with Frank Gehry, housing project, which sharply in contrast with the historical setting, yet allowing the visual interest to the plaza. The BPS has various functions, starting from gallery, offices, shopping, by allowing new structural system backing up suspended bridges, office spaces, residential on the top floors and the historical façade.
This is project sets an interesting assemblage of urban design intervention using heritage re-adaptive process and respecting the conservation norms and philosophy.
